Which is the “Maraka Graha” (Death-Inflicting Planet) in Your Horoscope?

— by Sricharananda

In a birth chart, the planet that acts as a deterrent or “killer” to the house of longevity is known as the ‘Maraka Graha.’

Before we identify which planet is the Maraka Graha in our horoscope, we must first understand the concept of the ‘Houses of Longevity’ (Ayu Bhava).

The Houses of Longevity

According to the principles of Vedic Astrology, the 8th House in the Lagna Kundli (Birth Chart) is considered the primary house of longevity (Ayu Sthana). It indicates the lifespan of an individual.

The ‘Bhavat Bhavam’ Principle

According to the Bhavat Bhavam principle, the house located at the same numerical distance from a specific house will signify the same results as that primary house.

  • Example: Since the 8th House signifies longevity, the 8th house from the 8th house—which is the 3rd House—also signifies longevity and lifespan.

The House of Loss (12th House)

In astrology, the 12th House is known as the Vyaya Sthana (House of Loss or Expenditure). Similarly, the 12th house from any specific house acts as the house of loss for that particular house’s significations.

  • Example: Let’s look at the 8th House (Longevity). The 12th house from the 8th house is the 7th House. Therefore, the 7th House causes the “loss” or depletion of the 8th house’s energy. It reduces longevity. This is why the 7th House is called a Maraka Bhava.
  • Following the same logic: We know the 3rd House also represents longevity. The 12th house from the 3rd house is the 2nd House. Therefore, the 2nd House also acts as a house of loss for longevity.

Consequently, we identify two primary Maraka Bhavas (Killer Houses) in a horoscope: the 2nd House and the 7th House. The lords of the zodiac signs falling in these houses are called Maraka Grahas or Marakadhipatis.

The Stronger Maraka: 2nd vs. 7th

Between the 2nd and 7th houses, which one is the more powerful Maraka?

While the 8th house indicates longevity, the 3rd house represents both longevity and courage (Parakrama).

  • The 7th house (12th from the 8th) depletes longevity.
  • However, the 2nd house (12th from the 3rd) depletes both longevity and courage.

Courage is essential for a human being to face life’s struggles and sustain themselves. If a person lacks courage and valor, how can they face family problems or navigate life’s challenges? Because the 2nd house impacts both life force and the will to live, the 2nd house is considered a stronger Maraka than the 7th house.

Impact of the Maraka Period

When the Dasha (planetary period) of the 2nd lord or 7th lord arrives, the individual may face various challenges in life or health-related issues.

If the lords of the 2nd and 7th houses are also enemies of the Lagna Lord (the planet ruling the first house), health complications are highly likely to occur. It is crucial to determine whether these Maraka planets are friends or foes to your Lagna Lord to understand their full impact.

This concludes our session on Maraka Grahas. In the next episode, we will explore other aspects of astrology.
